Overcoming a slump in performance

Global Sports Harmony Performance Coaching and Hynotherapy

The 'slump,' or 'rough patch' is well publicized in professional sport. Whether its because the everyday performer can relate to the athletes, or because the writer giving the slump publicity, can relate to the player, we have all heard about players who have suffered a decline in their performance. These are not pleasant stories.

First of all, to change anything, one cannot move from a present state to a desired state without acknowledging that something is going wrong. Acceptance of the current situation is of vital importance, even for those things that are only temporary. There can be varying reasons behind a decline in performance. To list a few: The player may be struggling with stresses or challenges outside of their sporting lives; They may be have changed something in their training or instruction that is not working; or most likely, they have become disconnected from the natural 'flow' of themselves. By being connected, I refer to the connection between mind and body, between the conscious and unconscious, between the consciousness and the natural rhythms of the athlete.

The Chinese refer to the 'Dantien,' the centre of the body that leads all movement! Martial Artists and performers talk about 'their centre,' exercise physiologists talk about the core. Essentially, these are all referring to, if not the same, very similar things: You have a mind in your stomach!

You may have wondered why your physiological state effects your technique, this is essentiallty the explanation. All movement, and effective thinking, originates from the centre of oneself, and is dependent upon a connection with the centre of oneself. If you don't believe me, ask 1 billion Chinese people and they'll tell you the same thing. Contrary to psychological theory, you are not a robot like something from Dr Who, you are a living breathing, human being. The laws of the natural world, to which we as humans belong, are different to the laws of physics or machinery. At the centre of every person, whether they're aware of it or not, there's a supreme intelligence. Some people believe this is a spiritual presence, I'll leave those beliefs up to you. Most people acknowledge that every person has a soul, and is truly an individual. When a person is at their optimum health, and for an athlete, performing well, there is a connection and congruency between what's happening in your mind, and what you're feeling in the centre of yourself!

So how does an athlete who has lost their centre reconnect again? That's an excellent question. The answer can be found from numerous ways, all of which you won't find from a 2 dimensional analysis of your thinking. At GSH, we can assist the athlete in connecting with their centre again by utilising effective hypnotherapy, and connection exercises. Often there may be some unconscious intentions that are not being satisfied by an athlete, and the symptoms of playing poorly are a metaphorical sign on the road saying 'wrong way, go back' or even 'wrong way, go home!' By home I mean reconnecting with oneself again.

It is not uncommon for musicians to have problems with their performance, or for writers to get writers block, simply because something inside of them isn't satisfied with the direction they're going in. For example, consider the following scenario: A world class golfer dreams of being number one in the world, and devotes his / her life to the mission. They're successful because of their commitment and passion for the goal, and genetic natural abilities. The problem is, they didn't think things through properly before achieving the goal. They find themselves in a situation where they're number one in the world, but they didn't realize that means, extra responsibility, less time with their family or makes it harder for them to relate to their mates who are struggling on the tour. Something inside of themselves thinks this is not acceptable to them, so they sabotage -- they start to play crap.

'If you've got problems with yourself you need to work it out.' Dave Matthews and The Jurassic Five.

The interesting thing about this situation is it doesn't have to be that way. Often the part of the person that is sabotaging the person just needs to be heard, supported and sponsored. As the famous saying goes 'there is more than one way to get the job done.' It is almost always possible for the unconscious part to have what he or she wants, in harmony with the complete person. So if you're suffering from a performance slump, don't quit the game, call GSH and lets talk it through. By utilizing nlp and hypnotherapy techniques we can work it out and get you back ontrack again, on a path even more prosperous than the paths of your past.
