Setting Goals
Whether they are conscious of it or not, all successful athletes set goals. No outcome is ever achieved without first rehearsing the achievement. Below is a useful way to set goals. The method below is useful because it allows you to set both realistic and empowering goals. The method below uses a combination of conscious and unconscious process, to create an integrated directional tool, moving you towards your goals.
Place yourself in a relaxed state and start to dream about what it is you desire. You may find it helpful to lay back and recline in a chair, and allow yourself to dream wildly. Ask yourself:
* what is the most wild thing I could achieve in my sport? In consideration of my genetic capabilities?
Let that go, relax and centre, soften your awareness, place one hand on your stomach about two inches below your navel, and then ask yourself the following questions:
* Is my goal realistic for me to achieve? If not now, what about with more training and instruction?
Everybody has limitations. It's my belief that people are aware of these limitations at a very deep level, at the centre of themselves. For example, I know I wouldn't be able to beat Tiger Woods in the U.S Masters, he's just too good, he's scooped the gene pool! However, my beliefs about my genetic abilities allow me to know that with effective practise and instruction, I'm good enough to play in the U.S Masters and be competitive, possibly even make the cut. This is likely to be true for almost anyone with some natural ability.
GSH is very perceptive in observing what people 'think' they can achieve, and what they 'know' they can achieve.
When you consult with GSH, if I sense you truly know you can beat Tiger Woods, I'll do everything I can in my power, to support you in that goal!
Once you've found a wild goal that also feels realistic and achievable for you. Associate into the goal and experience what it will be like to achieve it in all your senses. How does it feel? What can you see? What sounds can you hear around you? Next, mentally observe yourself achieving the goal from an observer position, like a 'fly on the wall.' Ask yourself what you notice / can learn about the scene? What are the beliefs and values of the future you achieving this goal? Relax, centre, soften your awareness, place one hand on your stomach about 2 inches below your navel and ask yourself:
* Are those beliefs and values congruent with what fits with me at a deep level, at the centre of who I am?
If you can answer yes to this question, that's a green light to 'Go for it!'
May the force be with you!
